September 16 - President Clinton announced that the United States would support the United Nations peacekeeping mission in East Timor with communications and logistical aid, intelligence, airlifts of personnel and material, and coordination of the humanitarian response. US forces would deploy about 200 people, about half of who would serve on the ground in East Timor.
2000 -
July 17 - U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and Australian Minister of Defence John C. Moore signed a Statement of Principles outlining future cooperation to advance Australian military technology, including submarines.
