USS Constellation CV-64, America's Flagship. Constellation, known as “Connie” by her crew, is homeported at North Island Naval Air Station, Coronado, Calif., just across the bay from Downtown San Diego.
The conventionally (diesel)-powered aircraft carrier is an impressive sight. The ship extends nearly 1,100 feet long and displaces about 88,000 tons. The size of this “floating city” is staggering. But the real marvel of an aircraft carrier is the crew and the enormous amount of activity concentrated in such a relatively small area. On the flight deck and in the hangar bays, the air wing operates up to 75 aircraft. Below, in the engineering spaces, eight boilers provide steam for propulsion and electricity.
