Sports Scholarships
Over 150,000 undergraduate athletic scholarships, worth over US$600 million, are awarded each year by colleges and universities throughout the States. Scholarships are available to men and women in 35 sports played at collegiate level, including everything from basketball, tennis and swimming, to badminton, rodeo and handball. Sports scholarships are based primarily on athletic talent and promise. Students with athletic ability and a good academic record are eligible to apply. Each institution sets its own athletic budget and decides how many and what types of sports scholarships it can offer. The scholarships are one year awards which are renewable on an annual basis for up to four or five years, and may cover tuition/fees, room and board, and/or required textbooks. Award amounts and conditions vary, and may therefore be worth anywhere from a few thousand U.S. dollars to nearly US$30,000 for one academic year. Given the emphasis placed on sport in U.S. colleges and universities, student-athletes often have a slight advantage when being considered for admission to an institution.
