Notice to the Press
Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
September 4, 2003

On September 4 and 5, Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will hold wide-ranging discussions with his Japanese counterpart, Vice Foreign Minister Yukio Takeuchi. They will be joined on September 5 by the Australian Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ashton Calvert for a trilateral discussion among the U.S., Japan, and Australia.

These discussions are part of our periodic, strategic policy dialogue with our close allies Japan and Australia. Similar meetings were last held in June in Tokyo. These discussions are designed to be a frank exchange on a variety of topics. This round of talks will focus on North Korea, Iraq, and other issues of regional and global concern.

There will be a camera spray at the beginning of the U.S.-Japan-Australia discussions at 2:15 PM on September 5.

Members of the press who do not have a State Department building pass should arrive at the 23rd Street entrance by 1:45 p.m. to be escorted to the camera spray location.
